Among the many masters of tea at that time, what stood out was Rikyu’s impeccable discernment of refined beauty, which he often found in surprising ordinary objects, or in innovative placement of traditional motifs.
Rikyu did not explicitly identify himself as a follower of Christ, but it is evident from historical records that he held Christianity in highest regard.3 He borrowed from the Bible its view of the equality of all people and translated it into his tea ceremony, or at least found overlaps. At the same time he took the derivative form of art flowing out of China and Korea, and created a distinct form of Japanese aesthetic.
The most significant portrait of Rikyu, the image that we rely on to know Rikyu’s personality and charisma, was painted by Tohaku Hasegawa after Rikyu had died.
